The Fastest (and easiest) Way to Grow a Garden

By Mary Ellen Bianco

The smell of freshly picked basil and the taste of a fresh tomato off the vine can be motivation to grow plants at home. We asked local expert Mary Ann Dallenbach, owner of St. Matthews Feed & Seed, for advice on ways to make gardening more accessible. Mary Ann says, “Grow what you like and start small. Pick three things — it’s supposed to be fun.”

Learn from a master gardener this weekend!

Eamonn Cullen will host the first Lessons Learned Garden Tour this Saturday.

Cullen learned to garden from watching his grandfather, who was head gardener at a seminary in Ireland. His garden today features plant communities compact enough for large groups and Cullen as he advances in age.

You are invited to Cullen’s garden, 1406 Delmar Lane, Southwestern Jefferson County, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 18th. Admission is $5, or free for JCMGA members. The tour is the first of four in the Lessons Learned season and is hosted by the Jefferson County Master Gardener Association.
