Lunch Plus One: The Café/Cave Hill Cemetery

Lunch Plus One is something to do with a friend or two or a relative for a simple outing. This Lunch Plus One combines a well-known local restaurant with the final resting place of well-known locals.

Located in an unassuming former manufacturing facility, The Café is known for its chandeliered ceilings, luscious patio, Southern-style breakfasts, and hearty luncheon fare. Nothing pretentious here. From three-egg omelets as big as the plate to a piled up chicken salad sandwich, there is much to choose from. My favorite is the demure #3 combination of half a sandwich, a cup of soup, one side, and a cookie ($10). The cookie is to save for later so I can order a piece of the dreamy Italian cream cake.

Tip: There is a small parking lot and plenty of street parking if you don’t snag a place. No reservations, so plan accordingly — it is a popular place and you may have to wait for a short time, especially on the weekend. Take that time to look around at the art and movie posters decorating the walls of the restaurant.

Located just minutes away from The Café at the top of Broadway is historic Cave Hill Cemetery. This might seem an odd place for an outing, but believe me the peace and beauty found here in the middle of the busy Highlands is, well, heaven sent. Visit the ducks at the lake as generations of Louisvillians have done. See the graves of Colonel Sanders, Muhammad Ali, George Rogers Clark, and many other locals whose names you will recognize: Bullitt, Grinstead, Speed. Make sure to drive through the National Cemetery located within Cave Hill, the burial spot of over 5,500 soldiers killed in the Civil War and other American wars.

Open everyday from 8am to 4:45pm. Stop at the main entrance for information and a map. Ask at the office for a schedule of the cemetery’s guided tours held on various weekends throughout the year or check here.

Extra: If you are so inclined, after lunch and before your tour of Cave Hill, stop in the showroom of Louisville Stoneware, which is just up the street from The Café at 731 Brent Street. This famous pottery celebrated its 200th year in 2015. Your out-of-town visitors can pick up a meaningful souvenir as a memento of their time in Louisville.
